The "Luxembourg Society for Linguistic, Ethnological and Dialectical Studies" was set up as a department of the "Institut Grand-Ducal" in 1935, under the denomination of "Section de linguistique, de folklore et de toponymie". In 1997 the denomination was changed to "Section de linguistique, d'ethnologie et d'onomastique".

The aims of the “Section” are:
  1. linguistic studies in general and more particularly of the Luxembourg language.
  2. ethnological studies on Luxembourg and surroundings
  3. Luxembourg etymological studies.
  4. onomastic studies (family names, place names).
  5. setting up of surveys (field research and through mail) and of archives (linguistic, ethnological and onomastic).
  6. Publication and update of the Dictionary of the Luxembourg language, based on the above studies and surveys.
